The Enthusiast

“Haas shows a skilled literary hand in his sharp first novel. Funny, thought-provoking, and a little alarming.”

- Publisher’s Weekly (starred review)

The Enthusiast (HarperPerennial) is about a fellow named Henry Bay, who “associate-edits his way across the country,” working at a string of hobbyist magazines -- Kite Buggy, Crochet Life, Spelunk, and Cozy, the Magazine of Tea, among many others.

“I never stayed anywhere long,” he tells us, “and I was the civilian at every magazine I worked for. At Ice Climbing I was the only staff member who still had all ten toes, and at Metal Detector Treasures I was the only one without twenty rings on his fingers.”

If I were writing it now I’d add an NRA magazine called Active Shooter. Next lifetime, I guess.
