S.E. Hinton hugely influenced Young Adult literature with her novels, including The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, and Tex. Tim Hunter and I adapted the latter into a 1982 movie, which was Tim’s directing debut (he later gave us River’s Edge, The Saint of Fort Washington, several other features and a lot of excellent TV).

 

For Tex we had a deluxe cast -- among them Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Meg Tilly, and Ben Johnson -- and the pleasure of hanging out with Susie Hinton in Tulsa, where we shot.
